Western Cape Fuchsia Society

The highlight of the year for fuchsia lovers and for avid gardeners is the annual fuchsia show which has been held in the Sanlam Hall in Kirstenbosch gardens for more than 20 years.

In the main hall of the show, members enter their plants and these are judged on the Saturday morning. Visitors can view them from about midday when the show opens officially. There is always a variety of fuchsias for sale and members of the Society are available to answer any questions.

The 2019 Fuchsia Show – Report by the Show Secretary

When I reported on the 2018 Fuchsia Show I expressed three simple wishes:

That more than 10 members would exhibit

That there will be an exhibit in every single class

That more visitors will be attracted to the Fuchsia Show

Disappointingly none of these wishes were granted

On a positive note, however, the 10 exhibitors entered 133 exhibits which are significantly more than the 116 in 2016, the 105 in 2017 and the 120 in 2018. The award for the most points scored overall went to Merle Craig and David Daniels who both scored 62 points each. The award for the best standard was won by Felicity Park-Ross with Billy, one of the three, quarter standards which Felicity had on show. Pink Ballet Girl by David Daniels was judged to be the best exhibit on show.

There were no exhibits in the following classes : class 12 (mega basket , double& semi double); class 14(half standards); class24 (species); class 29(workshop) This is definitely an area which we can work on for the 2020 show. An impressive innovation, suggested by Jill Lawson, was the 4 classes for half baskets. Jane Garvey (25cm half basket-Windhapper and Emma Louis) and Merle Craig (35cm half basket – La Campanella and Pink Ballet Girl) were the pioneering exhibitors in this new class.

It is appropriate that we thank the judges Jan Wiggelinkhuizen , Jo Fitzmaurice and Joy Kessler for their time and their extensive expertise. My impression, post the show, is that we are on a positive trajectory – hope this means that we will have a good year with a great Fuchsia Show as a climax to the year 2020
