Western Cape Fuchsia Society

The highlight of the year for fuchsia lovers and for avid gardeners is the annual fuchsia show which has been held in the Sanlam Hall in Kirstenbosch gardens for more than 20 years.

In the main hall of the show, members enter their plants and these are judged on the Saturday morning. Visitors can view them from about midday when the show opens officially. There is always a variety of fuchsias for sale and members of the Society are available to answer any questions.

The 2018 Fuchsia Show – Report by the Show Secretary

As the show secretary one has a bird`s eye view of the incredible effort that goes into exhibiting at our annual fuchsia show. This includes:
•    The logistics involved in getting the plants to and from Kirstenbosch
•    Grooming the plants to ensure that they show off their beauty and special allure to great effect
•    Spraying the exhibits regularly to ensure that they maintain their good looks over the two days of the show

It is appropriate, therefore, to express our thanks and gratitude to all ten exhibitors for their part in helping to make the 2018 fuchsia show the success that it was.
Felicity Park Ross again put up some wonderful exhibits and deservedly walked away with all the major accolades – most points overall – best standard – best on show. It must be nice when labours of love are rewarded!
Felicity was closely followed by the formidable team of Barbara and Ted Coulson who entered the second largest number of exhibits and scored the second highest number of points overall. Ted and Barbara continue to be an inspiration because it was not so long ago that they were awarded the beginners prize – and look at them now.
Jane Garvey`s achievement is remarkable and deserves special mention. She entered twelve exhibits and half of them were awarded first prize in the categories in which they were entered
Of the `newer` exhibitors Merle Craig continues to grow lovely fuchsias and to be awarded first and second prize in the variegated category is a special achievement

Looking ahead to the 7th and 8th December 2019 fuchsia show, I have a few simple wishes:
•    that more than ten members will exhibit their plants
•    that that there will be an exhibit in every single category – preferably not just a single exhibit
•    that we succeed in attracting more visitors to the fuchsia show. The aim is expose visitors to the wonderful array of fuchsia cultivars – to show the diversity of forms fuchsias can take –to show their versatility when combined with complementary plants –and hopefully introduce them to a fun and rewarding new hobby
